OVER 30, FABULOUS,SUCCESSFUL AND STILL SINGLE...

I SAW THIS ARTICLE ON ONE OF MY FRIEND'S PAGE ON MYSPACE...AND THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE IT ON HERE!

By Kris Frieswick, MSN Money

The majority of my most successful, good-looking, educated, talented girlfriends are still single.

If they had Y chromosomes, they would have been married a decade ago. Instead, like successful single women all over the country, they trek into their mid- to late 30s on their own -- experiencing fabulous professional success, buying real estate and making savvy investments for the future, without much going on in the relationship department.

Carolyn Kaufman, 33, has a doctorate in clinical psychology and teaches college in Columbus, Ohio. She is a perfect example of a woman who has everything except a date. "I have this crazy belief that I have the right to expect my potential partner to be at least as successful as I am, and to have as many things to offer as I do," she says.

Good luck, Carolyn. With more women than men earning advanced degrees -- 61% of master’s degrees conferred in 2007 will be to women -- those kinds of men are going to become harder and harder to find. (They call it the pinnacle of success for a reason: The view is great, but pinnacles are by nature narrow, pointy places. There’s no room for a crowd.)

Then there’s the issue of time. Most highly successful people work crazy hours, which makes it even more difficult to meet a suitable match. Christine Mohr, director of marketing and community relations for the YMCA in Washington, D.C., is out nearly every night of the week at fund-raisers, benefits and business dinners. "The person I’m trying to find is just as busy as I am," says Mohr, 29. "If we’re both that busy, when is the time when we’re going to meet?" She says the men she does meet at these events are usually married.

Of course, you have heard all these excuses before, from women both successful and not – I’m too busy, there are no good men left, they’re all married or gay, etc. But there’s another factor at work for women at the top of their game: They’re intimidating to men. No matter how enlightened most men claim they are, few are ready to pair up with a woman who is more successful, better paid and better educated -- not to mention better traveled, more connected and more socially savvy than they are.

Even Kaufman’s dream of marrying her equal may be wishful thinking: Experts say that highly accomplished men tend to marry women who are lower on the professional and educational food chain than they are, traditionally choosing women over whom they can exert control.

"I’ve heard men say, ’Why would a woman want me if she can do all that stuff herself?’" says Kaufman. "He was totally missing the point."

Mohr says her ex-boyfriend confessed his feelings of inadequacy to her one night after a couple of beers: "He said, ’I was just really intimidated by you and I didn’t know what to do.’"

It’s the dirty little secret of the battle for gender equality. It’s not that men still don’t believe women are equally capable, they just have a hard time visualizing their role in a relationship when the woman outranks them on all the measures they use to gauge their own success. It’s a little sad for the men, really. It also makes it very difficult for these power chicks to find a partner.

So what’s a girl to do? Review your expectations. (Hold on, I didn’t say lower them. I said review them.)

I abandoned the expectation of many "must-have" items in my years of dating before I met my husband. It’s not that I couldn’t find a man who possessed the right qualities, but it turned out they were irrelevant to a happy relationship. Was it crucial that my husband have a master’s degree? No. Would it be a deal- breaker if he didn’t love mountain biking as much as I do? No.

In the end, common values and goals, generosity, intelligence, respect, a warped sense of humor and a mutual attraction floated to the top of the list. Nearly everything else on that list was negotiable, including income and educational attainment.

"As you get older, you get more clear on what’s important to you," says Dr. Debra Condren, a psychologist, career coach and author of "am-BITCH-ous" -- which explores how and why women sabotage their own ambition, and why they should cut it out.

"I was very picky about men," Condren continues. "I wondered if there was anyone out there who was going to value and appreciate me. (But there) are many men out there who want a smart, competent, ambitious woman as a partner and to share in making an income."

He just might not be a CEO with a Ph.D. in astrophysics.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 14 million unmarried women living alone -- about 15.2% of the total households in the nation. That percentage climbs slightly each year. In fact, in 2005 for the first time ever, households run by singles outnumbered households headed by married couples.

Experts say that the divorce rate is one factor contributing to the trend. Another is a tendency among better educated, more secure women to postpone marriage.

For lots of these highly successful women, when given the choice between marriage and their current life, single wins, hands down.

Wendy Simmons -- a 39-year-old Brooklynite, founder and president of PR firm Vendeloo, a former club owner and a current world traveler -- loves being single. She was married for one year at age 25, but felt so trapped that she is having a hard time putting a positive spin on the idea of doing it again.

"The longer you go without marriage, the more complete you make your life, the more difficult the idea of a compromise in marriage becomes," she says. "I may be ready to try again, but every day I feel more and more like a confirmed bachelor. I see so many people struggling in relationships that it scares me."

Simmons rejects outright the notion of dumbing herself down to make herself more marketable to all those executives looking for a "wifey".

"For a lot of guys, the simple girl is easier because the man’s role is clearer: They make the decisions," she says. "It’s those things that I’m afraid of -- a life of compromise every single day."

TIPS FOR SUCCESS AT WORK!!

Tips for Success at Work
Current mood: contemplative
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers
In light of the challenging economic times we are facing, as well as senseless "issues" which are coming up at my job in particular, I feel it is a good time to point out tips to aid in success on the job to keep yourself on the job. I write this while thinking of times of hardship (layoffs, plant shutdowns, office politics leading to my own resignation, and sexual harrassment) I've come across over the past 9 years I've been working in my career as a scientist.

We need to take control of our careers to keep from finding ourselves one of the many faceless resumes flooding hiring managers' offices. Now, more than ever before, is the time to get serious about what you're doing! Communication and professionalism is the key.

1. Your attitude determines how far you'll go. Don't ever get yourself in a situation where people assume you "don't care". Bring enthusiasm. Be a person people look forward to seeing walk up. Time to time, check yourself. Always keep your humility! No one knows it all. Don't just say "I don't know." Go and find out!

2. Instead of communicating problems to management, focus on communicating solutions.

3. Always keep track of your performance, and if possible, place it on display. This will help others (coworkers and management) see that you are serious about your projects . It's also a nice wake up call for yourself.

4. Food definately works when trying to win allies and influence people!! Keep a bowl of pretzels or candy on your desk. You can also bring in food (breakfast chicken biscuits are a hit!) in the mornings. Invite people by for a break, you'll be surprised how quickly you cement your place in the company!

5. Never (NEVER) communicate negativity via email! Pick up the phone or set up a face to face. Only use email for positive messages! If you receive a negative email or someone tries to suck you into some fiery debate in your inbox, call them directly. Learned this one the hard way...

6. Look one level above the part. Even if you wear jeans on a regular basis to work, make sure you present yourself in such a way to show pride in what you represent. Coming to work in your pajamas with bedhead screams "I don't care!"

7. Show yourself to be a consistantly credible person of integrity. Walk it like you talk it. Set personal expectations and meet or better yet, beat them. Before you know it, you will be integral to your organisation's success! Be a go-to person! Take accountability and learn from mistakes.

8. Always look busy! Avoid a lot of idle chatter. Stopping by someone's office for a short break is fine, but keep it moving. People will thank you for valuing their time.

9. During down time, instead of surfing the net, get up and find a way to be productive. They hired you, you obviously have some marketable talent, put it to use!

10. Always be on time! This should go without saying. It is also good to be early because you can envision what you want to get out of the day.

There are more tips and please feel free to add to this list!

THE WRITING PROCESS....

WHY IT TAKES SO LONG GETTING A TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED BOOK PUBLISHED

The process a book goes through after it leaves the writer’s hands once the manuscript is submitted and accepted by a publisher is so time consuming, you want to tear your hair out. The manuscript changes hands so many times, it is a wonder there is any print left on the paper, or any paper left to print in book form. No wonder eBook publishing and self-publishing looks so appealing to writers.

‘Congratulations, we accept your manuscript,’ says the publisher. And you think your work is finished except for the booksignings, the marketing and the pats on the back for a job well done. After all, you’ve already put a considerable amount of time into the manuscript writing and researching. What is the holdup? Well, guess what? You’ve submitted your precious baby to be distorted, changed, misshapen into something you wouldn’t recognize as your own work, even if it does have your name on it. It seems everyone is a critic. And, you have to wonder why your manuscript was accepted in the first place, if a publisher wants to change it as a first order of business.

The tale of woe: First the editor reads and reviews the manuscript. Then the author and editor discuss possible changes. Why they cannot leave a good, well written story alone is a mystery that even God can’t figure out. Everyone has input for the output. Time must be permitted not only for the author to make changes, but for the editor to review the new, and not always improved version. (Hang on to your submitted draft!). All this keeps people employed.

If that isn’t enough, then the book goes off to be copy-edited. Copy editors are very important and too rarely praised for the work they put into a manuscript. A copy editor is responsible for more than merely proofreading. The copy-editor makes certain the book is in line with the “house” guidelines which can vary enormously from publisher to publisher. Depending on what other types of books a publisher publishes, you may want to tear your hair out here as well.

In a series, the copy-editor watches for continuity problems, not only within the volume, but within volumes in a series. (For those who write “formula” books, where you are told what to write, where every book sounds the same as the last 20,000 printings by said publisher, hang your heads.)

A good copy editor is pure gold. A bad one should be horse-whipped and hung by their pencils, pens, computer keyboards...whatever they use. Horror stories abound. After the copy-editing, good or bad, the copy-edited manuscript gets mailed back to the author. The author reviews the comments, both those directly written on the page and those included in a side letter.

“Stet” is a useful term for authors to remember. STET! Have it tattoo’d somewhere. You may be using it often. It means “leave it alone.” If the author thinks the critique is out of bounds, s/he can write a letter to explain why s/he does not want a change. Example: my first book, a person I hired to edit the book did not know that some of the story setting was in NY because NY was a port of entry, and why the hero was located there. S/he also didn’t know about Karate, or pressure points and wanted those sections written out as too violent. Hello! It was a spy story. S/he also hadn’t a clue that women were very accomplished in the sport of Karate in real life, not just the movies. When you run into this, know that an editor, copy-editor, critique partner, etc., needs to know what you know. Good copy-editors et al accept and appreciate the input. The bad ones do not and insist on slash and burn. A good reason to keep notes and sources of your research until the day you die.

When the manuscript gets back to the publisher, the next place it finds itself is Production. Production people are the people who decide (in consultation with the editor) on things like style of type, what numbers to use for chapter headings, and whether there will be any art of glyphs at the start of chapters. They also decide the cute little “dingbats”—(yes, it is a real word) the little symbols that indicate a break in the action and point of view within a chapter.

When all these decisions are made, the book is formatted. Then it is produced as “page proofs.” These are the pages of the book as they will appear in the actual book, but still unbound. They come out in big sheets. Page proofs are then sent off to the author for review as well. NEVER ever skip this stage or any other or assume the publisher at any level of production knows what they are doing. This will have YOUR name on it. You can only make so many apologies for bad work before you look like an idiot. You can find entire paragraphs dropped, missing sentences, words mysteriously misspelled or altered, haywire punctuation. It is your last chance to change anything in the text. Sadly, not enough time is given for page proofs, considering ALL the time spent in the rest of the production. The only thing needed to be returned are those pages WITH changes, so if your page proofs are okay, you are done. Ha! Rarely is everything okay.

Next, the book goes back to Production. Your changes are made (or ignored).
Along with this is the cover art and jacket copy to be dealt with. Here you may not have any input. If you do, consider yourself lucky. It is always good to have an idea or two for your cover. It doesn’t mean you ideas will fly with the designers, but if they happen to ask, you have something to contribute. Same with the dingbats.

Somewhere in this series of business decisions and production activity, your novel must be slotted into the schedule for printing and release, another point at which massive delays can happen. My first book had so may delays, I cried. Do not trust the date you are given. It can and more than likely…will change. That production date is only a could’a, would’a, maybe, sort’a, might happen. Change is inevitable. Roll with the punches.

And, that is why it takes a novel so long to come out on bookshelves. Even after the text is written, there are a tremendous number of stages along the way to the finished book. If a publisher cares about the finished product, none of them will be omitted. If you care, you will be patient. And celebrate. It took a long hard road to get a finished shiny book in your hands. Now you can understand why eBooks and self-publishing are so attractive.

WHAT IS THE LESSON?

Never rest on your laurels. If you want to be an enduring writer, go beyond being a one-book-wonder. Keep writing! You will never be done honing your craft. There is something new to learn with each book, especially in marketing and promoting. Publishers come and go. New talent rises and falls by the wayside because they thought they knew it all and the profession of writing and its rewards passed them by. Never become complacent in your craft.

Set short term and long term goals. Change and refine your list as needed. Yes, the list will change. Where would you like to be in six months? How about five or ten years from now? How will you get there. Plan, plan, plan, and dream, dream, dream. Learn all you can and pursue your dreams with enthusiasm. Hopes and dreams are the keys to the Universe.

You will compete, but compete with yourself. It’s in your DNA. Use others’ success as a benchmark for your own. Be inspired. Never stop dreaming. Set higher and higher goals for yourself. Enjoy the ride.

It is easy to be discouraged. Rejection isn’t easy for anyone. Keep in mind that each NO you receive is one step closer to a YES. Be thankful. You write because you have to write. This too is in your DNA. Get paid for it. Do not squander your talent.

Join writer’s groups. They provide inspiration and support from other writers. Other writers can provide resources, education workshops and encouragement. Too far away to participate? No time? Look online for listings in your area, or sign up for the many national organizations and bulletin boards available via the Internet.

Love your fans. Appreciate them.

Keep a trophy wall. Frame your contracts, your book covers, your thank you notes, your letters of appreciation. You’ve earned those accolades because you tried. You don’t know where you are going until you know where you’ve been. Remind yourself of all that you’ve achieved and all that’s possible to those who dare to believe in themselves. Success is trying. Failure is never having stepped out of your comfort zone to compete with yourself.

PART 2 -WHEN LOVE GOES WRONG!

I TRUSTED HER WITH ALL OF MY BEING AND MY HEART LIED TO ME ABOUT US BEING TOGETHER FOREVER! DECEITFUL AND MANIPULATING LIKE SHE WAS AT TIMES! I GUESS THE SHIT HIT THE FAN THE DAY I CAME HOME FROM WORK EARLY AND "SHE" WAS THERE! I WAS COOL LAID BACK AND OVERLY SECURED. NOT DUMB OR NAIVE , I SAW THE HAND WRITING IN THE WALL BUT I WAS TAUGHT THAT YOU NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT!

I COULD GIVE A LOOK AND IF MY EYES HAD BULLETS I WOULD HAVE STAYED IN JAIL ON MURDER CHARGES! MY HEART FELT PAIN UNKNOWING , I FELT THE TEARS STING MY EYES AND HELD THEM BACK FORCEFULLY! I LOOKED AT HER STRAIGHT IN THE EYES AND ASKED HER TO GET HER WHORE OUT OF OUR HOME! DISRESPECTED AND PISSED OFF! I HAD A REPUTATION TO KEEP UP AND I STOOD TRUE TO BEING A CLASSY SOPHISTICATED LADY, BUT THE TRUTH WAS I WOULD KICK AN ASS IN A HEART BEAT!

IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND WHY WAS IT THAT THIS BITCH OF MINE WAS NEVER SATISFIED? SHIT WE FUCKED FROM SUN UP TO SUN DOWN WHEN WE WERE NOT WORKING AND THERE WAS NOTHING THAT I WOULD NOT DO FOR HER! SHE WAS MAKING A FOOL OF ME AND I WAS NOT HAVING IT! RESPECT WAS THE UTMOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN ANY RELATIONSHIP THAT I WAS A PART OF, I JUST KEPT RUNNING INTO THESE WHORES.

IF ALL WANTED FOREVER SHE WANTED A FEW ROLLS IN THE HAY! SHE HAD THE WRONG WOMAN!SHE WAS GOING TO DO IT AND LIKE IT! LIED THROUGH HER FUCKING TEETH JUST BECAUSE THE SUN CAME UP OR WENT DOWN, NO REASON AT ALL TO DO SO! ALL I HAD TO DO WAS LOOK INTO HER FRIENDS EYES AND THE TRUTH WAS TOLD...

SMILING AS IF SHE WAS THE BEST LOOKING DAMN THING AROUND TRUTH BE TOLD I WAS NOT CAPTIVATED BY HER APPEARANCE BUT BY HER CONVERSATION NOW MONTHS LATER I AM FINDING OUT THAT EVERY THING THAT CAME OUT OF HER MOUTH WAS A LIE! ALL LIES...

IF SHE WANTED TO PLAY SHE WAS GOING TO PAY BOTH WAYS FINANCIALLY AND MONETARY! I WAS NOT THE ONE TO JUST LET IT GO IN THAT ASPECT,,ESPECIALLY IF I WAS BEING FAITHFUL AND TRUE!

HELP FOR SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS!

Getting Your Book In Barnes & Noble

How to be Considered for an Author Event

Each year, we review more than 100,000 submissions from publishers of every size and background. Our buyers review publishers’ catalogues, marketing materials and galleys or sample copies to help them make their decisions. Most of these books are added to our book database and a small order is placed for our warehouse. This makes a title available for sale on our Web site and for order through our stores.

If you would like your title to be considered by our buyers, please submit a finished copy (no manuscripts please) of the book along with marketing and promotion plans, trade reviews, and a note describing how the book meets the competition (what makes it unique) to:

The Small Press Department
Barnes & Noble
122 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10011

Please include your phone number and e-mail address.

The information must include the ISBN and the suggested retail price. The review process takes about six weeks. The Small Press Department responds to all submissions in writing.

All books will be considered for store placement based on subject matter and salability. Please consider the following points when publishing and presenting your book.

Points to Consider

Does your book have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)?
Does your book have a bar code?
What sort of binding (saddle stitch, staple, perfect, plastic comb, ring) does your book have?
Is your book available through a wholesaler?
Is your book priced competitively with other titles of a similar topic and quality?
Why should Barnes & Noble place your title on its shelves?
Where can you find more information on the topic of book writing, publishing, and marketing?

Does your book have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)?

We use the ISBN to track inventory and sales information. An ISBN is a 10-digit number that specifically identifies your title. ISBNs are furnished by:

ISBN Agency
630 Central Avenue
New Providence, NJ 07974
(877)310-7333
(908)219-0188 (fax)
www.isbn.org

Processing takes 10 working days. An extra fee brings 72-hour priority handling. If your book has already been printed, you can sticker your book with the ISBN once it is assigned. The ISBN and price should appear on the back cover of the book.
TOP

Does your book have a bar code?

Bar codes help our stores handle books more efficiently. The bar code which incorporates your ISBN is scanned at the time of purchase, thus recording accurately the sale of your book. The book industry uses the Bookland EAN bar code, not the UPC. If your book is already printed, you can have pressure sensitive labels produced for placement on the back cover. For a list of commercial Bar code suppliers, visit the BISG website: www.bisg.org/barcoding/bc_suppliers.html.
TOP

What sort of binding (saddle stitch, staple, perfect, plastic comb, ring) does your book have?

Perfect binding is more expensive, but perfect-bound books have the potential for a longer shelf life and better sales because the name of the book can be printed on the spine. Since most of the titles in our stores are placed on the shelves spine out, stapled or saddle stitched books essentially disappear. If your book is plastic comb-bound or perfect-bound, the title and other pertinent information should be printed on the spine. Otabind is another type of perfect binding that allows a paperback to lie flat.
TOP

Is your book available through a wholesaler?

Your willingness to place your book with a book wholesaler may determine whether or not we carry it. Wholesalers normally expect a 50-55% discount, pay in 60-90 days, and expect books to be returnable. Some expect free freight. Placing your book with a wholesaler will simplify your billing (one invoice to one location). It also allows Barnes & Noble to place larger orders and put the book on automatic replenishment. Wholesalers are used by many segments of the book industry: publishers, libraries, and booksellers. Other bookstores order from the same wholesalers used by Barnes & Noble. We can help put you in touch with an appropriate wholesaler.
TOP

Is your book priced competitively with other titles of a similar topic and quality?

Price can be a determining factor for a customer when looking at books similar in content, presentation and format. Look at the pricing of other like books in the same category, and try to price yours competitively.
TOP

Why should Barnes & Noble place your title on its shelves?

Tell us what makes your book unique or special. What is your marketing plan? Send us your publicity and promotional plans, along with any reviews or articles that may have been written about your book(s).
TOP

Where can you find more information on the topic of book writing, publishing, and marketing?

The reference shelf in your favorite bookstore or local library features a wide variety of titles about writing books and the business of publishing.
